Hanwha Engine Shares Drop 13.2% After Q3 Profit Misses Forecasts

Hanwha Engine fell 13.2% on Nov. 6, 2026 after Q3 operating profit of ₩40.9 billion missed forecasts and net profit dropped 61.7% as the KOSPI slid 6%.

Hanwha Engine Falls 13.2% After a Q3 Profit Miss

Hanwha Engine shares fell 13.2% on Nov. 6, 2026, the day the Korean ship-engine maker reported third-quarter profit below forecasts and the KOSPI lost 6.02%. The stock ended regular trading at ₩24,650 ($18.17), down from ₩28,400 ($20.93) a day earlier.

Operating profit rose 53.7% from a year earlier to ₩40.9 billion ($30.2 million), the company said in a preliminary filing. That was 30.5% below the ₩58.9 billion ($43.4 million) market consensus that SK Securities cited in mid-October, and net profit fell 61.7% to ₩11.6 billion ($8.6 million).

Hanwha Engine trades on the KOSPI, the main board of the Korea Exchange, under the code 082740, and was valued at about ₩2.06 trillion ($1.52 billion) at the close. Won amounts here are converted at ₩1,356.6 per dollar, the won's 3:30 p.m. rate in Seoul on Nov. 6, 2026, as reported by the Korea Herald.

Quarter Revenue Operating profit Operating margin Net profit
Q3 2025 ₩297.3 billion ($219.2 million) ₩26.6 billion ($19.6 million) 9.0% ₩30.3 billion ($22.3 million)
Q1 2026 ₩345.2 billion ($254.5 million) ₩51.4 billion ($37.9 million) 14.9% ₩52.9 billion ($39.0 million)
Q2 2026 ₩362.2 billion ($267.0 million) ₩37.9 billion ($27.9 million) 10.5% ₩33.2 billion ($24.5 million)
Q3 2026 ₩413.6 billion ($304.9 million) ₩40.9 billion ($30.2 million) 9.9% ₩11.6 billion ($8.6 million)

Revenue rose 39.1% from a year earlier and 14.2% from the second quarter. The operating margin, however, slipped for a second straight quarter from 14.9% in the first quarter, a level iM Securities called a record for the company.

The sharper drop came below the operating line. Pretax profit fell 48.3% to ₩16.2 billion ($11.9 million), leaving a gap of ₩24.8 billion ($18.3 million) from operating profit that the preliminary filing does not explain.

On the same day, the board approved buying back 200,462 shares, or 0.24% of the company, for ₩5.69 billion ($4.2 million) between Nov. 9, 2026 and Feb. 5, 2027. The purpose is employee pay rather than cancellation: the company said it is buying the shares "to use for stock-based compensation, such as RSUs (Restricted Stock Units) and performance incentive payments," according to its filing (translated from Korean).

The purchase nearly uses up what the company may spend. Buybacks are capped by distributable profit under the Commercial Act, and the filing puts the remaining cap at ₩5.71 billion ($4.2 million) after ₩15.7 billion ($11.6 million) already spent on 351,117 shares since the end of 2025.

Why the Shares Fell

The whole market was under pressure. The KOSPI fell more than 8% early on Nov. 6, triggering a circuit breaker that halted trading for 20 minutes from 9:03 a.m., and it closed at 5,059.69, the Korea Herald reported.

The trigger was fear that U.S. midterm election results would bring tighter rules on AI data center investment, according to the Korea Herald and Financial News. Machinery and equipment stocks fell 6.55%, Financial News reported, so Hanwha Engine fell about twice as much as its sector.

That theme touches Hanwha Engine directly. SK Securities raised its target price on April 27, 2026, citing possible orders for four-stroke engines to power U.S. data centers, Hankyung reported, and its Oct. 15 note pointed to 300 to 400 megawatts of engines the Hanwha group might supply to North American AI data centers from 2028.

The cost pressure had been flagged in advance. In the Oct. 15 note, SK Securities analyst Han Seung-han estimated about ₩5 billion ($3.7 million) a quarter in extra costs, split between amortization tied to the purchase of SEAM and research spending on marine battery systems, Asia Business Daily reported.

Currency is another strain. The won strengthened from nearly 1,550 per dollar at the end of June to the 1,350 range by late September, raising concern that dollar export earnings would be worth less in won, Hankyung reported on Sept. 30, 2026. Hanwha Engine's Oct. 15 engine contract with Samsung Heavy Industries, worth ₩132.3 billion ($97.5 million), was converted from dollars at ₩1,338.60, its filing shows.

After the close, market pages that include the exchange's evening session, which runs until 8 p.m., showed a last price of ₩24,350 ($17.95). The official closing price is still the 3:30 p.m. price, MoneyToday reported, even though brokerage apps and portals display the 8 p.m. price. The shares now stand about 74% below their 52-week high of ₩94,400 ($69.59), according to Hankyung market data.

Earnings Per Share

Hanwha Engine earned ₩2,082 ($1.53) per share in 2025, more than double the ₩970 of 2024, according to FnGuide data on Naver Finance. Earnings per share (EPS) is net profit attributable to shareholders divided by the share count.

The climb slowed in 2026. EPS was ₩633 in the first quarter and ₩398 in the second, or ₩1,031 ($0.76) for the half. On the preliminary Q3 net profit of ₩11.6 billion and the share count implied by 2025 results, third-quarter EPS works out to about ₩139 ($0.10), roughly 62% below a year earlier, by our calculation.

At ₩24,650, the stock traded at 11.8 times 2025 EPS and 11.3 times the FnGuide consensus of ₩2,181 ($1.61) for 2026. That estimate assumed Q3 net profit of ₩47.0 billion, about four times what the company reported, so the real forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is likely higher than it looks.

What Hanwha Engine Makes

Hanwha Engine builds the large low-speed engines that drive merchant ships, along with emissions-control systems, spare parts and service. Marine engines, including emissions systems and ship electrification, made up 89.4% of its ₩707.5 billion ($521.5 million) revenue in the first half of 2026, its half-year report shows.

It also supplies medium-speed engines for emergency power at nuclear plants. Its main customers are shipyards: Hanwha Ocean accounted for 35.2% of first-half sales and the Geoje shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries for 32.9%.

The order backlog stood at ₩5.98 trillion ($4.41 billion) on June 30, 2026, more than four times 2025 revenue of ₩1.37 trillion ($1.01 billion). In April 2026 the company completed its purchase of SEAM, a Norwegian electric propulsion company, for ₩306.5 billion ($225.9 million) in cash. When the deal was signed in December 2025, Edaily reported that SEAM held about 40% of Norway's market for electric ships.

Founded in 1999 and listed in 2011, the company is based in Changwon. Hanwha Impact, a Hanwha Group company, has been the largest shareholder since February 2024 with 32.77%, and the National Pension Service held 9.60% on June 30, 2026.

What Analysts Say

No brokerage note issued after the results could be found as of Nov. 7, 2026. Before them, SK Securities had cut its target twice, and every target stayed far above the current share price.

Date Firm Target price Rating
April 27, 2026 SK Securities ₩100,000 ($73.71), up from ₩72,000 ($53.07) Buy
April 29, 2026 iM Securities ₩101,000 ($74.45), raised Buy
July 8, 2026 SK Securities ₩90,000 ($66.34), down from ₩100,000 Buy
Oct. 15, 2026 SK Securities ₩75,000 ($55.29), down from ₩90,000 Buy

The targets come from reports by Hankyung, Edaily, MoneyToday and Asia Business Daily. "The stock price does not yet fully reflect the momentum in land-based power-generation engines," Han said in the Oct. 15 note, according to Asia Business Daily's English edition, which also quoted him calling the period an "expectations reset."

SK's ₩75,000 target is about three times the Nov. 6 close of ₩24,650.

What to Watch

The full quarterly report comes first. Korean listed companies must file it within 45 days of the quarter's end under the Capital Markets Act, which means by mid-November 2026, and it should show what caused the ₩24.8 billion gap below operating profit.

Next is an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on Dec. 17, 2026 in Changwon. Its only agenda item is approval of a plan to hold and dispose of treasury shares, and shareholders on the register on Nov. 10, 2026 can vote.

Korea context: Since Korea's third Commercial Act amendment took effect on March 6, 2026, companies must in principle cancel treasury shares within one year of buying them. Keeping them for uses such as employee pay requires a holding and disposal plan approved at a shareholders' meeting, the Financial Services Commission said. The Dec. 17 vote is on exactly that kind of plan.

There is also a regulatory question. At a parliamentary audit on Oct. 21, 2026, Kim Hyun-jung, a Democratic Party lawmaker, raised allegations that Hanwha Engine hired away staff from rival engine maker STX Engine and misused its technology.

Fair Trade Commission Chairman Ju Byung-ki said the antitrust agency would "thoroughly check whether business activities were obstructed through technology misappropriation via the outflow of personnel," according to Financial News (translated from Korean). That is a pledge to look into the matter, not a finding.

Taken together, Hanwha Engine is still growing sales and operating profit, but its margin has slipped two quarters in a row and an unexplained non-operating loss cut net profit by more than half, on a day the KOSPI fell 6%. The next dated event is the Dec. 17, 2026 shareholder vote on its treasury share plan.
